6 Simple Tips for Sparkling, Streak-Free Windows

Few cleaning jobs make as much of a difference as clean windows. They instantly brighten a room, let in more natural light and help your whole home feel fresher and more cared for.

The good news is that achieving sparkling, streak-free windows doesn't require expensive products or hours of hard work. With the right technique and a few simple tricks, you can get professional-looking results every time.

Here are my top tips for cleaner, clearer windows.

1. Avoid Cleaning Windows on a Sunny Day

It might seem like the perfect time to tackle your windows, but bright sunshine can actually make the job much harder.

When the sun is shining directly onto the glass, cleaning solutions dry too quickly, often leaving behind streaks and smears before you've had chance to buff them away.

Instead, choose an overcast day or clean your windows during the morning or evening when the sun isn't directly hitting the glass.

2. Use Two Lint-Free Cloths

One of the biggest mistakes people make is using the same cloth for both cleaning and polishing.

I always recommend using two lint-free microfibre cloths:

This simple switch can make a huge difference and helps prevent those annoying streaks that seem to appear once the sun comes out.

3. Master the "S" Shape Technique

Rather than wiping randomly across the glass, try using an "S" shaped motion.

Start at the top corner and work your way down the window in a continuous S pattern. This helps ensure every area is covered evenly and prevents you from missing sections.

It's a technique used by professional window cleaners for good reason—it works.

4. Keep It Simple with Warm Soapy Water

You don't always need specialist glass cleaners.

For indoor windows, a bowl of warm water with a small squirt of washing-up liquid is often all you need to remove fingerprints, dust and everyday grime.

Avoid using too much detergent as excess soap can leave residue behind and cause streaking.

A little goes a long way.

5. Use White Vinegar for Outside Windows

Outdoor windows face a tougher challenge thanks to rain, traffic pollution, bird mess and general weathering.

Adding a splash of white vinegar to warm soapy water can help cut through grime and leave glass sparkling clean. A window vacuum can also be really useful for outside larger windows at sucking up those soapy suds.

It's particularly effective at removing water marks and leaving a streak-free finish.

Simply clean the glass with your solution, then buff dry using your second lint-free cloth.

6. Don't Forget the Frames

Clean windows can still look dirty if the frames are neglected.

For UPVC frames, I like to use a gentle cleaning paste applied with a soft cloth. It helps remove marks and restores brightness without scratching.

For wooden frames, a small amount of orange oil on a cloth can help clean, nourish and revive the wood while leaving a lovely fresh scent.

Always test products on an inconspicuous area first and avoid over-saturating wooden frames.

Bonus Tip: Tackle the Tracks and Sills

Before cleaning the glass, vacuum any dust, cobwebs and debris from the window tracks and sills.

There's nothing more frustrating than cleaning your windows only for dirt from the frames to transfer back onto the glass.

A quick vacuum first makes the whole job easier and leaves a much more professional finish.

Final Thoughts

Window cleaning doesn't have to be a dreaded chore. With the right timing, a couple of quality lint-free cloths and a simple cleaning solution, you can achieve crystal-clear results without spending a fortune.

Remember: avoid direct sunshine, clean using an S-shaped motion, buff with a separate cloth and don't forget the frames. These small changes can make a big difference and help your windows stay cleaner for longer.

The reward? More natural light, a brighter home and that wonderful feeling of looking through perfectly clean glass.
