Bicarbonate of Soda: The Wonder Every Home Needs
If there’s one product I will always have in my cupboard, it’s bicarbonate of soda. Cheap, cheerful, and unbelievably versatile, this little white powder punches well above its weight.
It’s natural, effective, and perfect for so many everyday cleaning jobs and most importantly, it works. If you’ve never really used it beyond baking, let me show you just how powerful it can be around your home.
Here are 10 brilliant ways to use bicarbonate of soda 👇
Bicarbonate of Soda Hacks
Freshen Up Your Carpets
Sprinkle over carpets, leave for 20–30 minutes (longer if you can), then vacuum. It absorbs odours beautifully perfect for pet smells or high-traffic areas.
Deodorise Your Mattress
Light sprinkle, leave for an hour, then vacuum off. I do this before changing bedding to keep everything feeling fresh and clean.
Clean Plugholes
Add a generous scoop down the plughole, follow with hot water, let it fizz, then rinse away.. It helps neutralise smells and break down build-up.
Remove Fridge Odours
Pop a small open bowl in the back of your fridge. It absorbs lingering food smells and keeps everything fresher.
Lift Tea & Coffee Stains
Make a paste with a little water and gently rub onto stained mugs. It works wonders without scratching.
Brighten Grout
Mix into a thick paste, apply to grout lines, leave for 10–15 minutes, then scrub with a scrubbing brush or old toothbrush. So satisfying!
Freshen Trainers
Sprinkle inside overnight to absorb smells. Shake out in the morning game changer.
Tackle Bathroom Smells
A small bowl placed discreetly in the bathroom helps absorb unwanted odours naturally.
Boost Your Laundry
Add a spoonful directly into the drum with your wash. It helps neutralise smells and brighten whites especially great for gym kit and towels.
Clean Greasy Baking Trays
Sprinkle bicarbonate directly onto greasy trays, add a little warm water to make a paste, and leave for 20–30 minutes. The paste helps break down stubborn grease so it scrubs away much easier.
Freshen Your Bin
Sprinkle a layer of bicarbonate into the bottom of your bin (under the liner) to absorb smells before they start. It’s especially good in the kitchen during warmer months.
