Get Autumn ready with my 5 simple tips
Autumn is such a beautiful colourful season, with its orange and yellow leaves and bright red berries. Use my easy steps to get your home ready for autumn and prepared for the winter months, so you can return from those beautiful walks to an inviting, cosy home.
Prepare Your Entrance
Cheer yourself up on colder days by creating a warm welcome. Autumn is the perfect time to spruce up your front door with a seasonal wreath and decorations.
- Garden Tidy: Remove summer hanging baskets and plant evergreen shrubs or winter-flowering plants for structure.
- Mud Control: Add a good quality door mat inside to trap dirt and soak up moisture from muddy shoes.
- Hallway Overhaul: Put away sandals and sun hats. Organise space for heavy coats, wellies, and umbrellas using hooks, baskets, or a storage bench.
Time to Get Cosy
Switch summer cushions for autumnal colours and bring out the soft throws. Use candles with scents like pumpkin, apple, cinnamon, and nutmeg to add instant ambiance.
The Essential Checks
Book a boiler service now—you don't want to lose hot water in January! Bleed your radiators, clean off built-up dust, and ensure all smoke alarms are working perfectly.
Get Organised Indoors
A seasonal switch-over is the best time for a quick declutter. If you didn't wear it this summer, it's time for it to go!
- Wardrobes: Use vacuum storage bags to pack away summer clothes neatly and save space.
- Linen Closet: Swap light linens for heavier bedding and extra blankets.
- Kitchen: Clear out the fridge, freezer, and cupboards. Donate tins you won't use and decant pasta or rice into attractive jars.
- Lighting: Check all bulbs and use a recycled make-up brush to flick dust off the lampshades for better efficiency.
Garden & Exterior
Protect your outdoor space before the frost hits to save yourself work in the spring.
Storage & Maintenance
Wash off patio furniture before storing it. If it must stay outside, use properly fitting covers to prevent rust. Don't forget to clear out the gutters!
Outdoor Lighting
Ensure your outside lights are working so you can safely navigate to the shed or bins on dark evenings. It also looks lovely to illuminate winter plants in the back garden.
