Hate Cleaning? Here’s How to Make It Actually Work for You
How Can I Make Cleaning Less of a Chore and More Efficient?
Let’s be honest cleaning can feel like a chore, especially when life is busy and the list never seems to end. But I always say, cleaning shouldn’t feel like a punishment. It’s about creating a home that feels calm, fresh and easy to live in without exhausting yourself in the process.
Over the years, I’ve learned that it’s not about doing more, it’s about doing things smarter and keeping it simple. A few small changes can make a big difference.
Keep It Simple – You Don’t Need Loads of Products
One of the biggest mistakes people make is overcomplicating cleaning.
You really don’t need cupboards full of products. I always stick to a few trusted basics:
A good multi-purpose cleaner
That’s more than enough for most jobs around the home.
Pair that with the right tools and you’re already making life easier. A spray mop saves time and effort, and a lightweight cordless vacuum means you can quickly go around without dragging anything heavy out.
And always keep a stack of clean microfibre cloths ready they make such a difference and can be used on almost every surface.
The 15-Minute Rule – My Go-To Method
This is something I swear by.
Don’t try and do everything at once it’s the quickest way to feel overwhelmed. Instead, set a 15-minute timer and focus on one room or even just one task.
You’ll be surprised how much you can get done in that time when you’re focused.
I always say, start with the jobs that make the biggest impact wiping surfaces, a quick tidy, a fast vacuum. It instantly makes a space feel better without hours of effort.
And if you’ve got a bit of music or your favourite podcast on, it makes the whole thing feel much more enjoyable.
Tackle the Worst Jobs First
It’s very easy to avoid the messiest bits, but getting those out of the way first makes everything else feel easier.
Whether it’s the kitchen sides, the bathroom sink or a pile of washing up get the toughest job done first, and the rest will feel much more manageable.
Keep It “Tidy Enough”
This is a big one.
Your home does not need to be perfect. It’s lived in, and that’s exactly how it should be.
Instead of aiming for perfection, aim for “tidy enough” a space that feels clean, calm and works for your family.
Let go of the pressure. Once you do, cleaning feels a lot less like a chore.
Get Into a Rhythm
Cleaning becomes much easier when you find your rhythm.
I like to move through the house with a cleaning caddy, going room to room and doing quick resets. It stops you going back and forth and wasting time.
And having the right tools really helps:
An extendable duster for those high-up areas
A small scrubber or brush or a recycled toothbrush for tougher spots
These little things save time and effort and make jobs quicker to get through.
Make It a Habit, Not a Big Job
The secret to staying on top of things is doing little and often.
A quick wipe here, a 10-minute tidy there it all adds up. When you stay on top of the small jobs, nothing builds up into something overwhelming.
Final Thought
Cleaning doesn’t need to take over your day. With the right approach, it can be quick, simple and even a little bit satisfying.
Keep it simple, stick to what works, and don’t put pressure on yourself to have a perfect home.
A clean, calm space that works for you that’s what really matters.
