The Do’s and Don’t’s of fabric conditioner
Fabric conditioner isn’t just about making your clothes smell good and keeping them looking fantastic; it has its place and sadly can’t be used on all fabrics. When you do use it, it is truly amazing and will help to protect against colour fading.
When NOT to Use Fabric Conditioner
Using conditioner on the wrong fabrics can do more harm than good. Here are the items to keep it away from:
Cashmere and Wool
Softeners can cause pilling and wear down fibres on expensive items. Always wash inside out on a low temperature and avoid enzyme-based detergents which destroy wool protein.
Towels & Microfibre
It makes towels less absorbent and gives them a greasy feel. Use 20ml of white vinegar instead to keep them soft and fluffy!
- Flame Resistant Clothing: Softener covers fabric in a waxy coating that can make children's pyjamas and costumes more flammable.
- Sensitive Skin: If you notice irritation, stop immediately. Look for brands formulated to be kinder to skin.
When to Use Fabric Conditioner
Fabric conditioner is fantastic for synthetic fibres like acrylic and polyester, but there is one place where it really shines:
When in doubt, leave it out! Keeping these simple rules in mind will help your clothes last much longer and stay in tip-top condition.
