Citric Acid: The Zesty Cleaning Powerhouse

How do I use citric acid for household cleaning

If you live in a hard water area like I do, you’ll know how quickly limescale builds up kettles, taps, toilets, coffee machines… it’s never-ending. One product I always keep stocked for this is citric acid. It’s affordable, powerful and brilliant at breaking down limescale without loads of harsh chemicals.

What Is Citric Acid?

Citric acid is a natural acid found in citrus fruits, and it’s fantastic for dissolving limescale, mineral deposits and water marks.

It’s especially good for:

  • Kettles

  • Coffee machines

  • Toilets

  • Taps and glass

  • Anywhere you get hard water build-up

How I Use Citric Acid at Home

Descaling the Kettle

This is one of the easiest and most satisfying jobs.

  • Fill your kettle halfway with water

  • Add 1–2 tablespoons of citric acid

  • Boil the kettle and leave it to sit for 20 minutes

  • Rinse thoroughly and boil fresh water once before using

It removes limescale so easily and leaves your kettle looking like new.

Cleaning the Coffee Machine

Limescale can affect both the taste of your coffee and how your machine runs.

  • Mix 1 tablespoon of citric acid with water in the tank

  • Run it through the machine as you would a normal cycle

  • Follow with 1–2 cycles of clean water to rinse

Such a simple way to keep everything working properly.

Removing Limescale from the Toilet

Citric acid is brilliant for tackling those stubborn marks in the toilet.

  • Sprinkle 500g of citric acid directly into the bowl

  • Leave it for at least an hour (or overnight for heavier build-up)

  • Give it a scrub with the toilet brush and flush

It helps break down limescale without loads of scrubbing.

Tackling Hard Water Marks

For taps, shower screens and tiles:

  • Mix 1–2 teaspoons of citric acid in a spray bottle with warm water

  • Spray onto affected areas

  • Leave for a few minutes

  • Wipe away with a cloth and rinse

It cuts through water marks quickly and brings back the shine.

Making Simple Toilet Bombs

If you like a little DIY, these are great for keeping your toilet fresh.

You’ll need:

Mix the two together (roughly a 1:2 ratio), add a tiny bit of water to form a crumbly texture, press into moulds and leave to dry.

Drop one into the toilet when needed they fizz up and help freshen and clean at the same time.

Using It as a General Limescale Spray

One of the easiest ways to use citric acid is keeping a diluted spray bottle ready to go.

  • Add 1–2 teaspoons of citric acid to a spray bottle of warm water

  • Shake until dissolved

Use it on:

  • Taps

  • Shower screens

  • Tiles

  • Around sinks

It’s perfect for quick, regular maintenance and stops limescale building up.

A Few Handy Tips

  • Always rinse surfaces well after use

  • Avoid using on natural stone like marble or granite

  • Store your solution in a clearly labelled bottle

  • A little goes a long way you don’t need much

Why I Love It

Citric acid is one of those products that just works without fuss. It’s simple, affordable and tackles one of the biggest cleaning challenges in the home limescale.
