Soda Crystals: The Heavy-Duty Hero Every Home Needs

What are the best heavy-duty cleaning jobs for soda crystals?

Soda Crystals: The Everyday Cleaning Hero You Might Be Overlooking

If there’s one product I always recommend having in your cleaning cupboard, it’s soda crystals. They’re affordable, versatile and brilliant for tackling some of the tougher jobs around the home especially the ones you might not think about straight away.

A lot of people confuse them with bicarbonate of soda, but they’re actually quite different and once you know how to use them properly, they can make everyday cleaning that little bit easier.

What Are Soda Crystals?

Soda crystals (also known as washing soda) are a natural cleaning product that are fantastic for cutting through grease, neutralising odours and softening water.

They’re stronger than bicarbonate of soda, which makes them perfect for those heavier-duty cleaning tasks.

Soda Crystals vs Bicarbonate of Soda

This is where people often get confused.

  • Bicarbonate of soda is milder and great for light cleaning, deodorising and gentle scrubbing.

  • Soda crystals are much stronger and better suited for deep cleaning, degreasing and tackling tougher grime.

So while both have their place, soda crystals are the ones you reach for when you need a bit more power.

My Go-To Uses for Soda Crystals

1. Freshening Drains

If your sink is starting to smell a little off, soda crystals are brilliant.

Just pour a cup down the drain, followed by hot water. It helps break down grease and freshen everything up quickly.

2. Cleaning Washing Machines

Over time, washing machines can build up residue and start to smell.

Run an empty hot wash with a cup of soda crystals to clean the drum and freshen the machine. It’s such a simple job but makes a big difference.

3. Tackling Greasy Pans and Surfaces

Soda crystals are amazing for cutting through grease.

Add some to hot water and use it to soak greasy pans, oven trays or even extractor fan filters. It lifts the grease with very little effort.

4. Laundry Booster

If your clothes are looking a bit dull or not smelling as fresh as they should, add a small amount of soda crystals to your wash.

They help soften the water and boost your detergent, giving you a better clean overall.

5. Cleaning Bins

Bins can quickly start to smell, especially in warmer months.

Wash them out with a solution of soda crystals and warm water to neutralise odours and keep them fresh.

6. Unblocking and Maintaining Drains

For regular maintenance, soda crystals are a great natural option.

Using them weekly helps prevent build-up and keeps everything flowing as it should.

How to Use Them Safely

Because soda crystals are stronger, it’s always best to:

  • Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin

  • Avoid using them on delicate surfaces

  • Rinse surfaces well after cleaning

A little goes a long way, so you don’t need to use much.

Why I Always Keep Them Stocked

For me, soda crystals are one of those quiet heroes in the cupboard. They’re not fancy, but they work — and they work well.

From freshening drains to boosting laundry and tackling grease, they’re a simple, affordable solution for so many everyday cleaning jobs.
