Citric acid used for cleaning a toilet

Using citric acid to clean your toilet is an effective and environmentally friendly alternative to commercial cleaners. It’s safe for the environment and your family, but tough on grime!

The Citric Acid Method

Before you start, get your supplies together in a cleaning caddy: you’ll need citric acid powder, rubber gloves, and a sturdy toilet brush.

  • Pour: Use the citric acid as it is and pour 100g to 200g directly into the toilet pan. If the limescale build-up is quite bad, don't be afraid to use more!
  • Wait: Pop the lid down and allow it to sit for at least 1 hour. For the absolute best results, leave it overnight to break down stains, mineral deposits, and bacteria.
  • Scrub: After it has worked its magic, scrub the bowl thoroughly, paying special attention to stubborn areas. For any marks above the waterline, a pumice cleaning stone works wonders.
  • Flush: Finally, flush to rinse away the solution and all that loosened grime. Wipe the seat and exterior with a microfibre cloth.
PRO TIP: For particularly tough stains, you may need to repeat the process a couple of times until your toilet bowl is clean and sparkling!
