How to clean walls
What is the best way to remove marks and scuffs from painted walls?
Let’s be honest… keeping your walls mark-free when you’ve got kids or pets is basically a full-time job 😅
From crayon “artwork” to mystery scuffs in the hallway, it doesn’t take much for walls to start looking a bit tired.
But before you reach for the paint… try these easy fixes first
1. Ink, Pen & “Creative Moments” 🎨
We’ve all been there… one minute everything’s fine, the next there’s a masterpiece on the wall!
Before panicking:
Spray a little hairspray onto a cloth (not directly onto the wall!)
Gently rub over the mark
For tougher pen marks:
Dab lightly with rubbing alcohol
And for delicate wallpaper:
A tiny bit of white (non-gel) toothpaste can help lift the stain
2. Everyday Marks & Scuffs
These are the ones we all get especially in hallways and kitchens 👇
Crayon & Wax Marks
Use a magic eraser with gentle pressure
Or:
Make a paste with bicarbonate of soda and water
Gently rub with a sponge
✦ Bicarbonate of Soda
✦ Non-Scratch Sponge
Grease & Kitchen Marks
If you’ve got splashes or greasy marks:
Use diluted sugar soap in warm water
For fresh grease spots:
A little lemon juice works wonders
SCUFF TIP 💡
For everyday fingerprints and marks:
Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water
Wipe with a microfibre cloth
✦ White Vinegar
✦ Microfibre Cloths
For higher areas:
Use a flat mop or extendable tool
✦ Flat Head Mop / Extendable Cleaner
Perfect for ceilings, corners, and those awkward spots!
3. Know Your Wall Type (This Matters!)
This is really important before you start scrubbing 👇
Matte Paint
More delicate
Can go shiny if you scrub too hard
So always:
Use soft cloths or gentle pads
Gloss or Durable Paint
Can handle a bit more cleaning
Great for high-traffic areas like hallways
Busy Home Tip 🐾
Hallways always take the worst of it coats, bags, shoes…
Use a bit of vinegar on kitchen roll to remove rubber scuffs quickly
And if you’ve got pets:
Add a wall protector behind food bowls to stop splashes
✦ [Wall Protector / Splash Guard
Lynsey’s Final Tip 💛
Walls are one of those things we forget about… until we really notice them!
But a quick wipe here and there makes such a difference and saves you having to repaint.
Keep it light, keep it regular, and don’t panic most marks will come off much easier than you think ✨
