How to deal with bed bugs
The last thing you want to bring home from a lovely holiday is a bed bug infestation! These little pests are hitchhiking experts, but with a bit of vigilance, you can keep them well away from your home.
When Staying Away
Before you even think about unpacking your holiday wardrobe, do a quick "bug check" of your room:
- The Inspection: Check the carpet and the bed for reddish-brown bugs, tiny white eggs, or dark spots. If you spot anything, consult the staff immediately.
- Off the Floor: Use the luggage rack to keep your bags off the ground. Bed bugs love carpets, and they can easily crawl into bags left on floors, beds or chairs.
When You Return Home
Never take your suitcase upstairs and unpack it on your bed! Unpack on a hard floor in a well-lit area so you can easily spot unwanted visitors.
- The Hot Wash: Pop clothes straight into the washing machine on the hottest cycle possible. Add a laundry cleanser or white vinegar for protection.
- Luggage Care: Vacuum the inside thoroughly with a powerful handheld vacuum, then empty the canister into an outdoor bin. Spray the inside with an effective disinfectant spray.
- Deep Clean: For soft cases, break out the steam cleaner and give it a blast with hot steam to kill any remaining eggs.
Bedroom Maintenance
Keep your bedroom clutter-free. If you use a laundry hamper in the bedroom, clean it regularly! They are attracted to the smell of dirty clothes and often lay eggs in fabric hampers. Consider using plastic storage bins instead.
Mattress Care
When changing sheets, vacuum the mattress and frame. Invest in a zipped mattress protector for extra peace of mind. Use hydrogen peroxide as a natural bleach for stains, and deep clean with my handheld upholstery cleaner a few times a year.
