How to look after and clean pillows
How can I improve my pillow hygiene and get them sparkling clean?
This one’s for every restless sleeper out there! We lay our heads on our pillows night after night, but rarely think about what’s lurking inside sweat, bacteria, and those pesky dust mites. Don’t worry, I’ve got you let’s give your pillows the TLC they deserve and turn your bed into a fresh, hotel-worthy haven.1. Foam Pillow Hand Wash Treatment
1. Foam Pillow Hand Wash Treatment 🛁
Memory foam pillows need a little extra love they’re delicate, porous, and definitely not made for the washing machine!
Instead, spot clean them little and often to keep them fresh. Mix up a small bowl of warm water with a drop of laundry detergent and a splash of white vinegar. Dip in a soft sponge or cloth and gently work over any marks or sweat patches no soaking needed.
For a lovely, calming scent, add a few drops of lavender essential oil to your mix. It gives that fresh, just-cleaned feel without being overpowering.
Once you’ve cleaned the surface, lightly go over the area with a damp cloth to remove any residue, then press with a dry towel to absorb excess moisture. Always leave your pillow flat to air dry in a well-ventilated space patience is key here, but it’s worth it!
2. Machine Washing & Protection Kit 🧺
Synthetic Maintenance
If you’ve got polyester or hollowfibre pillows, you’re in luck they can go straight in the washing machine. Use a gentle cycle with low heat, and add a splash of antibacterial laundry cleanser to really freshen things up.
When it comes to drying, always throw in a couple of wool dryer balls they help fluff everything back up and stop that lumpy feel. It’s such a simple trick but works wonders!
The Hygiene Shield
Prevention is everything, trust me! A good-quality quilted pillow protector is your best friend it keeps all the nasties out and extends the life of your pillows. Wash them weekly with your bedding and you’ll notice the difference straight away.

HYGIENE TIPS 💡
Here’s where you level up your routine:
Pop synthetic pillows in the tumble dryer on high for 15 minutes once a month this helps kill dust mites with heat
If your pillows are over 2 years old and feeling flat, it’s time for a refresh your neck will thank you!
Air your bed every morning for at least 30 minutes
Switch to a silk pillowcase for smoother skin and less product build-up
3. Dealing with Yellowing & Dust Mite Defence 🌿
Let’s talk about those yellow patches totally normal, but totally fixable! They’re usually caused by sweat and natural oils.
To brighten things up, add half a cup of bicarbonate of soda to your wash. It’s brilliant for lifting stains and neutralising odours without using anything too harsh.
For memory foam pillows, always air dry them flat and keep them out of direct sunlighttoo much sun can damage the foam.
And here’s a little pro tip: use a large laundry basket when transporting your clean bedding it keeps everything organised and makes bed-making feel that bit more put-together.
