How to reduce your energy bills

With energy prices always on our minds, finding simple ways to cut costs around the home has never been more important. The good news is, you don’t need to make huge changes it’s often the small, everyday habits that make the biggest difference.

And one thing people don’t always realise? A clean home can actually be a more energy-efficient home.

Let me talk you through some easy, practical ways to save energy (and money) without overcomplicating things.

A Clean Appliance Is an Efficient Appliance

This is something I always say if your appliances are clogged, dusty or full of limescale, they have to work harder, which means they use more energy.

A few simple jobs can really help:

  • Descale your kettle regularly — limescale makes it take longer to boil

  • Clean your washing machine to keep it running efficiently

  • Vacuum behind your fridge and clean the coils — dust build-up makes it work harder to stay cold

  • Empty your tumble dryer filter after every use — this improves airflow and reduces drying time

These are quick jobs but they all help your appliances run better and use less energy.

Be Smart in the Kitchen

The kitchen is one of the biggest areas for energy use, but a few tweaks can make a big difference.

  • Use an air fryer or smaller appliance instead of the oven for quick meals

  • Only boil the water you actually need in the kettle

  • Keep your oven door closed while cooking every time you open it, heat escapes

  • Batch cook where you can to make the most of the heat you’re already using

It’s all about being that bit more mindful.

Keep the Heat Where You Need It

There’s no point heating your home if the warmth is escaping.

  • Use draught excluders along doors

  • Keep doors closed to trap heat in rooms you’re using

  • Add radiator reflector foil behind radiators to push heat back into the room

  • Make sure radiators aren’t blocked by furniture or long curtains

These small changes help your home stay warmer for longer without turning the heating up.

Layer Up and Stay Cosy

Before reaching for the thermostat, think about how you can stay warm in other ways.

  • Wear layers and thermal socks

  • Use cosy blankets or throws on the sofa

  • Switch to warmer bedding if needed

It sounds simple, but it really does help reduce how often you need to put the heating on.

Smarter Laundry Habits

Laundry can use a lot of energy, but there are easy ways to cut back.

  • Always try to run full loads

  • Use eco settings or lower temperatures where possible

  • Add wool dryer balls to your tumble dryer to reduce drying time

  • Air dry clothes when you can

Even doing one or two of these regularly can make a noticeable difference.

Lighting and Water Quick Wins

These are some of the easiest swaps you can make:

  • Switch to LED bulbs they use far less energy and last longer

  • Turn lights off when you leave a room (it sounds obvious, but it all adds up)

  • Consider a water-saving shower head to reduce hot water usage

Don’t Forget Your Boiler and Radiators

Keeping your heating system running properly is key.

  • Bleed your radiators to remove trapped air

  • Make sure your boiler is serviced regularly

  • Keep an eye on pressure levels

A well-maintained system works more efficiently and costs less to run.EFFICIENCY TIP: Swap out old bulbs for LED bulbs and install a water-saving shower head to see an instant difference!
