Amazing uses for a bar of soap in your home
What can I use a bar of soap for besides washing hands?
Don’t underestimate a good old bar of soap it’s one of those traditional staples that can do so much more than you think. I always say, before you throw away those little leftover bits, there are plenty of clever ways to use them around the home.
It’s simple, effective and a great way to make the most of what you’ve already got.
Freshen Drawers and Wardrobes
This is one of my favourites, especially if you’ve got soaps that smell lovely.
Grate the bar or use up those smaller pieces and pop them into a little fabric or mesh bag, then place them in:
Drawers
Wardrobes
Linen cupboards
It keeps everything smelling fresh without the need for sprays, and it’s a great way to use up leftover bits.
Stop Mirrors Steaming Up
If your bathroom mirror constantly steams up, this is such a simple fix.
Rub a dry bar of soap lightly over the mirror, then buff it off with a clean microfibre cloth.
It creates a light barrier that helps stop condensation sticking perfect for busy mornings when you just want to get ready without waiting for the mirror to clear.
Fix Stiff Zips and Drawers
Got a zip that won’t budge or a drawer that sticks?
Just rub a little soap along:
The zip teeth
The drawer runners
It acts as a natural lubricant and helps everything glide smoothly again — no need for sprays or oils.
Help Needles Glide Through Fabric
This is a great old-school tip.
If you sew, keep a bar of soap nearby and gently run your needle through it before using. It helps it glide through thicker fabrics much more easily and makes the job quicker.
Emergency Laundry Solution
If you ever run out of detergent, a bar of soap can save the day.
Grate a small amount into warm water, give it a shake and let it dissolve. It creates a gentle cleaning solution that can be used for a quick wash.
It’s not something you’d use all the time, but it’s a handy backup to know.
Loosen Tight Rings
If you’ve ever struggled to remove a ring, soap can help.
Rub a little onto your finger and it will help the ring slide off more easily quick, simple and effective.
Marking and Fixing Small Jobs
Soap can also be used for little household fixes:
Marking hems or measurements on fabric
Lightly marking walls where you need to drill (wipes off easily)
It’s one of those handy little tricks that comes in useful more than you’d think.
Make Use of Every Last Bit
Instead of throwing away small pieces, keep them in a container and use them up:
For handwashing small items
For cleaning cloths
Or combine them into a mesh bag to use in the shower
It all helps reduce waste and makes the most of what you’ve got.
PRO TIP: Banish trainer odours by sprinkling grated soap inside them overnight just use a soft cleaning brush to tap it out in the morning.
