Lets go back in time with cleaning
As much as I love a cleaning gadget or a fancy pink bottle, I do also love to go back to basics. I can spend hours talking to my Nans about how they cleaned when they were young and what products they used.
A Glimpse into the Past
Old-fashioned remedies are kinder to our skin, better for the environment, and much cheaper too. Here are some classic Victorian and vintage tricks:
- The Victorians: They used carpet rods to beat rugs outside; the cold air killed germs naturally.
- Carpet Stains: Treated with neat lemon juice, while warm bread was used to soak up oil marks.
- Silverware: Line a pot with aluminium foil, fill with warm water, and add salt and bicarbonate of soda.
Polishing & Refreshing
A mix of linseed oil, lemon juice, and white vinegar was the ultimate furniture polish. For a fresh scent, boil water with cinnamon sticks on the stove.
Nan's Favourites
Both of my Nans loved Methylated spirits. They are brilliant for cleaning glass and removing the sticky residue left behind by labels and stickers.
MY DREAM: To go back in time and spend a day as a 1950s housewife! It makes me appreciate how much easier our modern vacuums make looking after our homes today.
