Keep your laundry smelling great

Fresh Smelling Laundry Tips | Queen of Clean

Do you want your laundry to smell fresh and clean after every wash? Well I certainly do, I love nothing more than to give my clean dry fresh laundry a good old sniff. There is something so satisfying about fresh smelling clothes.

Freshness Foundations

A good mix of laundry products will be key, but if your clothes are going into a dirty machine, it will have an impact. It’s so important to take care of your washing machine if you want clean clothes and fresh smelling cloths.

Don't Delay Drying

Don’t leave clean washing in the machine after the load has finished, especially not overnight. Get it out straight away! A warm, dark, closed washing machine is where bacteria and mould will thrive, causing washing to lose its fresh smell.

Handling Dampness

Never put damp clothes or towels in the laundry basket. If you've been swimming, put wet things in the machine straight away. Also, ensure items like jeans are bone dry before ironing; damp pockets allow bacteria to grow.

Tips for Maximum Scent

  • Dry Outside: Freshly aired cloths, towels and bedding is such a fabulous feeling. The sun is also a bleaching agent for whites! I always wipe the line first and soak my pegs weekly in warm soapy water.
  • Product Choice: I prefer washing detergent over powder. Use fabric conditioner wisely so it doesn't clog the machine, and try scent boosters for a direct fragrance release.
  • Tumble Drying: Heat can eliminate fresh smells, so use tumble dryer sheets. I've found the Asda ones are really good and long-lasting!
PRO TIP: For smelly football kits or sweaty gym clothes, always opt for a hot wash to kill off any lingering bacteria!

Stains and Maintenance

Pre-treat stains by soaking garments in a mixture of water and white wine vinegar overnight. I always find natural is best! Finally, look after your washing machine; if you don’t clean it regularly, it will start to smell and won't clean your clothes properly.
