Laundry Powder v Liquid

Liquid vs Powder: Which is Better? | Queen of Clean
Laundry liquid and measuring cap

The choice for laundry products these days is absolutely huge and it can be really hard to choose the right product that suits you and your family. I am often asked: what is better to use, laundry powder or laundry detergent?

The Battle of the Suds

Both products aren’t actually that different, but they have their own strengths. Powder has been around since the early 1930s, while the 1970s brought liquid detergents to the market in Europe and Japan.

Team Powder

  • Best For: Grass and muddy stains.
  • Plus Side: It is usually cheaper and comes in recyclable packaging.
  • Downside: Can leave clumps on clothes or undissolved chunks in your machine, which can cause blockages.

Team Liquid

  • Best For: Greasy stains and acts as a great pre-stain treatment.
  • Plus Side: Works much better with cooler water as it is already a liquid.
  • Downside: Easier to use too much product, which can leave a residue on your clothes.

Temperature Matters

These days we are so much more economical with our washing and use lower heat settings. Liquid detergents work much better with cooler water, whereas some powders don't dissolve well in cooler water. If you use powder, make sure you store it in a completely dry area to prevent caking, especially over the winter months!

PRO TIP: Be careful with the measurement lines on liquid caps—they can be hard to read! Using too much liquid detergent can leave a gunky residue on your fresh laundry.

Are you team liquid or powder? Whichever you choose, making sure you use the right amount for your load is key to a perfect wash. Thanks for reading!
