The Best Laundry Hacks
Most of us don’t enjoy doing the laundry. Yet that pile just keeps on getting bigger and bigger. But a few simple tips and tricks can make your life so much easier.
Smart Washing Habits
The Sock Monster Solution
Keep socks paired in a mesh laundry bag. Leave it hanging in your laundry hamper and toss socks in as you take them off. When full, add the bag straight to the wash!
Zip Your Zips Up
Zip up any clothing items before washing. Sharp metal teeth can snag on lace or delicate fabric and ruin your items, and the zipper itself could even damage your machine's drum.
Stain & Odour Hacks
- White Chalk: Keep some in your laundry cupboard to treat grease stains. Chalk is ultra-absorbent; rub it on oily stains to absorb the grease before the wash.
- Freezer Refresh: An overnight stay in the freezer won't kill bacteria, but it will help refresh clothes and combat odours—perfect for getting one more wear out of jeans.
- Vinegar Soak: Pre-soak sweaty sports clothes in half a cup of white vinegar mixed with cold water for an hour to break down sweat stains and smells.
Drying & Hand-Washing
Wool Dryer Balls
Ditch dryer sheets for wool dryer balls. They keep air moving, smooth wrinkles, and speed up drying time. Add 3 for small loads and 6 for larger ones.
Salad Spinner Secret
Hand-wash small delicates or swimwear in a salad spinner with a bit of detergent. It's more powerful than hand-massaging but gentler than the machine. You can even use it to spin them dry!
Final Quick Tips
Prevent colour runs by using a colour catcher, especially if you don't separate your loads. To speed up drying, shake your clothes out before hanging or throw a dry towel into the tumble dryer for the first 15 minutes to absorb excess moisture.
