Fresh Bath Towels

Towel Care Guide | Queen of Clean
Stack of fresh, fluffy towels

There is nothing worse than pulling a bath towel from the cupboard and noticing that it does not smell clean. Thick, absorbent towels feel good, but they hold onto moisture—and moisture leads to bacteria! YUK.

Keeping Towels Fresh Between Uses

When you get out of the bath or shower, you need to keep the air circulating. Throw the window open or use your ventilation fan. Forget hooks; they don't offer enough air. Instead, opt for towel rails so you can stretch the towel out fully.

Washing Guidelines

Towels are thick and heavy, so they absorb everything! Never over-use laundry products—stick to the correct dosage. Overloading the machine is a no-no; with towels, think less is more. For sanitary reasons, always wash bath towels separately from clothes.

Drying Your Towels

Always shake towels before drying to fluff the fibres. Ensure they are bone dry before putting them away, as dampness leads to mildew. If you don't have a tumble dryer, remember they can take up to 24 hours to dry indoors on a rack.

Say NO to Fabric Conditioner

Fabric conditioner is doing your towels no favours. It is a soft wax coating that takes away absorbency and the soft, bouncing feeling. If you must use it for the scent, only do so every 3rd or 4th wash.

MY TOP TIP: Use white vinegar! It is a natural disinfectant that strips away residue and keeps towels soft and fluffy. Don't worry—the smell disperses!

Invest in Quality

Good-quality bath towels can last for 10 years with proper care. I have been a huge fan of Hampton and Astley towels for many years; they wash beautifully. It is definitely worth paying a little extra for quality.
