Can a clean freak like me cope with a dog ?
If you've followed me on social media, you’ll know I’ve been debating getting a family dog. For a clean-freak with OCD and anxieties, the thought of muddy paws and "doggy smells" was daunting—but Hetty Boo has officially joined the family!
Puppy Training & Cleanliness
I put a routine in place before Hetty even arrived, and this Guide to raising a puppy was a total lifesaver for the whole family. Here is how I'm keeping the house spotless:
- Toilet Training: We used Mikki puppy pads in every room and rewarded every garden visit with Pooch and Mutt treats.
- Odour Control: When accidents happen, standard sprays aren't enough. I switched to the pet odour neutralisers from the Dooleys range to neutralise odours so she doesn't go back to the same spot.
- Night Time Success: After some great advice from my Instagram community, we moved her last feed to 4pm. No more "morning surprises" in the crate!
Keeping the "Dog Smell" Away
I would be mortified if my house smelled of dog! I use a baby fresh pet cologne—I spray it on my hands and rub it through her fur. She also gets a weekly bath in the utility sink using Dooleys shampoo and a good brush with a slicker brush.
The Walking Routine
Walking is my favourite part! We use an anti-pull training harness and a car seat belt for safety. I always carry biodegradable lavender scented poo bags!
My "Dog-Friendly" Cleaning Secrets
- Entryway Prep: I keep paw wipes and old towels by the back door to clean her up before she even steps inside. For muddy paws, a portable paw cleaner is a must!
- Soft Furnishings: I wash her baskets and blankets every single morning. The sofa is always covered with a waterproof throw when she’s in the lounge!
- The Vacuum: You’ll be vacuuming more than ever. Grab a dedicated pet hair vacuum to keep on top of those stray hairs!
