How to clean a microwave
The microwave is one of those appliances we often put off cleaning. It’s "out of sight, out of mind" until nasty smells and food splatters take over! But don't worry, I have a simple, steam-powered way to get it spotless.
The Steam & Lemon Method
Forget scrubbing for ages—let the steam do the hard work for you!
- Prepare: Fill a microwave-safe bowl with warm water and add one lemon cut into 4 quarters.
- Boil: Place the bowl inside and set the microwave for 5 minutes.
- Wait: Once the timer goes off, leave it for another 5 minutes without opening the door. This allows the lemon steam to dissolve the grease and grime.
- Wipe: Remove the bowl and the plate. Wash the plate in warm soapy water with washing up liquid and simply wipe the inside walls and ceiling with a damp cloth. The dirt will come away so easily!
Tough Stains
If you have some really stubborn, old food stains that won't budge, add a little white vinegar to your cloth and rub directly onto the area. It will lift right off!
Fresh Finishing
Dry the plate thoroughly before popping it back in. Your microwave will not only look like new but will smell incredibly fresh thanks to the natural lemon oils.
PRO TIP: Never skip the 5-minute waiting period! That extra time allows the steam to really penetrate dried-on food, saving you from having to scrub the ceiling of the appliance.
