How to clean an iron

How to Clean Your Iron | Queen of Clean
Ironing setup and iron care

If your iron isn’t gliding effortlessly or the plate is sticky, it's time for a clean! While every model is different, these simple hacks will help you tackle mineral buildup, oil, and grime in no time.

How to Remove Mineral Buildup

Mineral deposits can clog steam vents and leave white chalky marks on your clean clothes! To prevent this, always empty the water tank after every use.

  1. Bicarb Paste: Mix bicarbonate of soda and water into a thick paste. Apply to the soleplate, then wipe off immediately with a wet cloth.
  2. Cotton Buds: Dip a cotton bud in white vinegar and gently clear out the steam vents.
  3. The Flush: Fill the reservoir with a 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar. Run on full steam over a sink until empty.

The Sticky Iron Fix

Turn your iron to the highest setting with steam off. Run the hot iron across kitchen roll. If it stays sticky, sprinkle a tablespoon of salt on the paper and try again!

Removing Oily Residue

Unplug and cool the iron. Wipe the soleplate with a rag dipped in vinegar, then rinse with water. For stubborn oil, you can repeat the process using a tiny bit of ammonia.

MY TOP RECOMMENDATION: Faultless Hot Iron Cleaner is a fantastic product for removing melted webs, scorched synthetics, and starch buildup. It makes your iron glide like new!
