How to descale a kettle

The Fastest Way to Descale Your Kettle Naturally

If your morning cuppa has started tasting a little… off, chances are your kettle is crying out for a descale! Limescale doesn’t just affect taste it can slowly damage the heating element over time. But don’t worry, you don’t need harsh chemicals or expensive cleaners. With simple ingredients already in your cupboards, you can descale your kettle naturally and quickly, leaving it looking and smelling fresh.

The Ultimate Natural Descale

This method is my go-to for a quick and effective clean:

Fill the kettle halfway with equal parts water and white vinegar, or use around 20ml of concentrated lemon juice

.Leave to soak for at least an hour or longer if you have heavy, crusty build-up.

Boil the kettle with the solution inside this helps the acidity lift the limescale professionally.

Empty and rinse thoroughly with cold water.

Boil a fresh batch of water and discard it to remove any lingering vinegar or lemon scent.

Powerful Natural Alternatives

Citric Acid
If your kettle is seriously neglected, citric acid is your secret weapon. Just add two tablespoons into half a kettle of water, boil, and watch the scale dissolve instantly. It’s odourless and far more powerful than vinegar alone!

The Lemon Squeezy
Slice up a fresh lemon and pop it in the water before boiling.

Not only does it shift the scale, it also naturally deodorises, leaving your kitchen smelling fresh and citrusy.

Spout & Filter Tip

Don’t forget the bits that get overlooked! Wrap kitchen paper dampened with white vinegar around the spout to remove crusty scale. For mesh filters, use a small cleaning brush to gently scrub any trapped limescale. This keeps your kettle flowing perfectly and prolongs its life.

Maintaining Your Kettle

Hard water areas suffer the most, but a few simple habits will keep your kettle in top shape:

Empty leftover water daily to prevent scale forming.

Use filtered waterit reduces mineral deposits significantly.

Shine the exterior: Wipe with a microfibre cloth to keep it looking pristine.

Lynsey’s Quick Loop Hack

Make this a weekly habit! Even a quick five-minute rinse and wipe can prevent build-up from ever becoming a problem. You’ll always have a professional-standard kettle, and your tea will taste perfect every time.
