How to descale a kettle

How to Descale Your Kettle | Queen of Clean
Professional kitchen cleaning setup

The average kettle will develop a layer of limescale at some point. But rather than scrubbing with chemicals, you can descale your kettle in minutes using natural ingredients already in your kitchen cupboards!

The Step-by-Step Method

  1. Mix: Fill the kettle with water and add 20ml of white vinegar or lemon juice.
  2. Soak: Leave the mixture to sit for at least one hour.
  3. Boil: Leave the solution inside and bring the kettle to the boil.
  4. Empty: Pour the water out—any limescale lumps should come away easily.
  5. Rinse: Fill with fresh cold water and boil once more to rinse thoroughly.

Natural Alternatives

Citric Acid

If you don't have vinegar, pop 20ml of citric acid powder into the water and follow the same boiling process for a sparkling finish.

Fresh Lemon

Slice up a lemon and add 3 slices to the water before boiling. It’s effective, natural, and leaves your kitchen smelling amazing!

PRO TIP: For stubborn scale around the lid or spout, dampen kitchen paper with white vinegar and wrap it around the area for 20 minutes before wiping away!
