How to get rid of stale cigarette smells

Removing Cigarette Smells | Queen of Clean
A clean and fresh home interior

I am often asked how to get rid of stale cigarette smells, particularly when moving into a new property. Smoke is a persistent odour that bonds to walls and carpets—but natural neutralisers can win the battle!

Why Smoke Smells Stick

Cigarette smoke is composed of about 4,000 different chemicals. These leave behind resins and tars that physically stick to your furniture, upholstery, and walls. Air fresheners only mask the smell for a few days—you need to neutralise the chemicals at the source.

White Wine Vinegar

Being an acid, it is incredibly effective at cutting through resin and tar. Place saucers of white vinegar around affected items in a sealed room overnight. You can also mix it with warm water to wash windows and hard surfaces.

Bicarbonate of Soda

Perfect for fabrics! Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over carpets and upholstery, leave for several hours (or a full day), and then vacuum off. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil to the powder for an extra boost.

PRO TIP: Never underestimate the power of fresh air! Leave items in a well-ventilated room or even outside. Circulation is key to lifting those deep-rooted odours.
