How to keep flowers lasting longer
No doubt you will receive a beautiful bunch of flowers on special days throughout the year, and the longer they last, the better! Here are a few of my clever tips to keep them looking fresher for longer.
The Basics of Flower Care
Preparation
- Clean Your Vase: Residue from washing up liquid can hurt flowers. Clean with white vinegar or lemon juice instead.
- The 45-Degree Cut: Always cut stems at an angle using sharp scissors to help them drink more water.
- Remove Foliage: Any leaves sitting beneath the water line will rot and create bacteria.
Environment
- Keep it Cool: Avoid direct sunlight or sitting your vase near a heated radiator.
- Ditch the Fruit: Keep flowers away from the fruit bowl! Some fruits produce ethylene gas that makes flowers wilt faster.
- Refresh: Don't forget to change the water every few days!
PRO TIP: Spritzing a little hairspray over an arranged vase of flowers will keep them looking pristine for longer and prevent wilting!
Kitchen Cupboard Add-Ins
Try adding these to your water to keep your bouquet thriving:
Bacteria Blockers
- Copper Coins: A 2p piece has antimicrobial properties that prevent bacteria from growing in the water.
- Bleach: A tiny splash of bleach keeps the water clear and inhibits bacterial growth.
