How to tackle the hardest cleaning jobs
What Are the Best Ways to Tackle the Most Hated Cleaning Tasks?
We’ve all got those jobs we put off the ones that feel awkward, time-consuming or just a bit grim. But the truth is, most of them are only hard because we’re not using the right method or tools.
Once you know a few simple tricks, even the most dreaded jobs become quick, manageable and much less of a hassle.
Here’s how I tackle some of the most hated cleaning tasks around the home.
Kitchen & Dining Areas
High-Up Dust (Out of Sight, Out of Mind!)
The tops of cupboards, picture frames and door frames are classic spots for dust build-up.
The easiest way? Use an extendable duster and do a quick sweep every now and then. It takes seconds but stops that heavy build-up over time.
And a little tip the more regularly you vacuum and dust lower areas like skirting boards, the less dust travels upwards.
Greasy Extractor Fans & Filters
These can get really sticky and clogged, especially if you cook a lot.
Instead of scrubbing endlessly, soak them in hot water with soda crystals. It helps break down grease quickly, so you’re not fighting it.
After soaking, a quick scrub is usually all it needs much easier than doing it dry.
Behind Appliances
We often forget behind the fridge, washing machine or dishwasher — but dust and crumbs build up fast.
If you can, pull them out occasionally and give the area a quick vacuum and wipe.
A Handy Trick You’ll Love
If you’ve got dusty radiators, try this:
Use a hairdryer to blow dust out from behind, and place a damp cloth underneath to catch it.
It’s quick, effective and saves you trying to squeeze into awkward gaps.
Bathroom Jobs
Behind the Toilet
This is one of the most awkward areas to clean, and it’s often missed.
Use a flat mop or slim cleaning tool to reach behind without having to get on your hands and knees. It makes a job you’d normally avoid much easier.
Grout That Looks Grimy
Grout can make a whole bathroom look tired.
Make a simple paste with bicarbonate of soda and water, apply it to the grout, give it a scrub with a small brush, then rinse.
It lifts dirt and freshens everything up without needing anything too harsh.
Limescale Build-Up
Taps, shower screens and tiles can quickly build up with limescale.
Use white vinegar to break it down spray, leave for a bit, then wipe away. It’s simple and really effective.
Bedroom & Living Areas
Mattress Freshening
Not the most exciting job, but such a good one to do.
Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over your mattress, leave it for an hour, then vacuum it off. It helps remove odours and keeps everything feeling fresh.
Upholstery & Sofas
Crumbs, dust and bits build up in seams and corners.
Use your vacuum’s upholstery attachment to get right into those areas. It makes a big difference and only takes a few minutes.
Under Furniture (The Forgotten Zone!)
Dust and “fluff” always collect under sofas, beds and units.
Use a long, slim cleaning tool or under-appliance wand to reach these areas without having to move heavy furniture.
It keeps dust levels down and helps the whole room feel cleaner.
The Key to Easier Cleaning
Most “hated” tasks come down to two things:
Not having the right tools
Letting jobs build up too much
If you stay on top of them little and often, and use simple tricks like these, they stop feeling like such a big deal.
Final Thought
Cleaning doesn’t have to be difficult or dreaded. With the right approach, even the trickiest jobs can be done quickly and easily.
Keep it simple, don’t overthink it, and find what works for you that’s the secret to staying on top of your home without the stress.
