How to look after your jeans

Jeans drying on a line

Washing denim is one of those questions I get asked a lot, especially when they are new. When washing jeans, it’s so important to look after them if you want to keep them looking like new and ensure they are long-lasting!

The Very First Wash

On their very first wash, make sure you wash your jeans separately. The dye from jeans can transfer during the washing cycle and discolour other garments very easily. Choose a non-bleach based detergent designed to keep colour safe.

Machine Rules

Always wash jeans inside out and never use a hot wash—try to stick to a maximum of 30 degrees. Make sure you close the zips and fasten any buttons too.

Drying & Ironing

Never tumble dry jeans! The heat damages fibres and causes fading. Stretch them out and air dry. For ironing, stay inside out and do it while they are slightly damp.

Handy Laundry Tips

  • Spillages: If you get a stain, don't try to rub it out while wearing them. Take them off and wash them to avoid creating a faded patch.
  • Colour Maintenance: I use Dylon Machine Dye Pods to keep my denim looking great.
  • Freeze Cleaning: A tip from my Nan! If your jeans just need refreshing, put them in a sealed bag in the freezer for 24 hours. It kills odour-causing germs without using water.
PRO TIP: In the winter months, avoid drying your jeans on a radiator as the direct heat can make the fabric stiff and damage the elasticity!
