How to look after your jeans
What is the best way to wash jeans and maintain denim quality?
Denim is one of those forever pieces in your wardrobe but only if you care for it correctly. If you’ve ever wondered why your jeans fade, lose shape, or just don’t feel the same after a few washes… this is your sign to upgrade your routine.
Here’s your Lynsey-style, no-nonsense guide to keeping your denim looking expensive, structured, and long-lasting 👖✨
The Everyday Wash Routine (Done Properly)
Turn your jeans inside out before they go anywhere near the machine. This protects the dye and keeps that rich colour for longer.
Skip harsh powders go for a gentle liquid detergent instead
Add a splash of white vinegar into the drawer to help lock in colour and remove odours naturally.
When it comes to drying? Air dry wherever possible. Heat is what ruins the shape.
If you need to iron, place a microfibre cloth over the denim (Amazon link here) to avoid those shiny marks.
Quick refresh tip:
Keep a glass spray bottle filled with water + a little white vinegar and lightly mist between wears. Fresh denim, no over-washing.
The Freezer Trick (Yes, Really)
If your jeans aren’t dirty but just need freshening up, skip the wash completely.
Pop them into a sealed bag and place in the freezer overnight.
This helps reduce bacteria and odours without fading the fabric.
Perfect for raw denim or your favourite pairs you don’t want to overwash.
Stop Colour Bleeding Before It Starts
New jeans? Don’t just wear them straight away.
Soak them in cold water with a cup of salt before the first wash.
This helps set the dye and prevents colour transfer onto lighter fabrics or furniture.
It’s a small step that makes a big difference.
Protect the Stretch (This Is Where Most People Go Wrong)
If your jeans contain stretch, harsh detergents will break that down over time.
Avoid biological powders completely.
Stick to a delicate liquid detergent and always wash at 30°C or below.
This is what keeps your jeans fitting properly not sagging after a few wears.
Don’t Ignore the Hardware
Before washing, always fasten zips and buttons. It stops snagging and protects everything else in the wash.
Once dry, give buttons a quick wipe with a damp microfibre cloth to remove residue and keep them looking polished.
Taking care of your denim properly isn’t complicated but it is intentional.
Do this consistently, and your jeans won’t just last… they’ll stay looking like new.
