Washing at lower temperatures

Laundry being washed in a machine

Recently I was asked to appear on BBC radio to discuss washing at lower temperatures. Did you know the average family does 400 loads of laundry per year? That calculates out to 7.69 loads per week!

Making the Switch

I always used to wash clothes at 60 and bedding at towels at 90 degrees but last year I made the switch. Firstly, I didn’t have time for long cycles, and secondly, my clothes just never looked quite right—some tops just weren’t square when I ironed them!

Benefits of 40°C & Under

  • Clothes last longer and keep their colour.
  • Items stay in shape and will not shrink.
  • Quicker cycles for a busy life.
  • Saves money on household bills.

Liquid vs. Powder

Using a washing liquid is better for stained clothes and effective on grease. Powders can sometimes leave residue, whereas liquid can double up as a pre-treater!

What to Keep at 60°C

Everyday wear can certainly be washed low, but there are a few items I would continue to wash at 60 degrees for hygiene:

  • Underwear & Socks
  • Bedding & Towels
  • Outerwear such as coats
PRO TIP: Don’t forget to look after your machine! Invest in some washing machine cleaner to eliminate nasty residue and odours in the pipes.

Eco-Friendly Habits

Save money and the environment by doing full loads. If you don’t need to do a daily load, try every other day! It is also important to remember to give your denim a little extra care to keep it looking fresh.
